During the month of June we participated in several different activities and enjoyed the company of many Haligonians. The community spirit is alive and well in this city.
Most mornings we started our day at CrossFit Kinetics with a high energy group of people that are interested in maintaining good health and improving their fitness levels. Our trainer during the weekday morning sessions is Jim Hardy, and he scales the workouts to meet everyone’s ability, and gently pushes us when he knows we are capable of achieving more.
Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings we connect with a local running group to enjoy treks through the city and discussions on sites, history, current issues, and hopes for the future. This group of athletes comes from a wide array of backgrounds, and sharing stories with them provides us with more insight not only into Halifax, but to other parts of Canada and the world. This week everyone wore pink to the evening run session to participate in the Halifax Think Pink Week to raise awareness of the CIBC Run for the Cure event in October.
Thursday evenings were full of chatter as we participated in Toastmasters meetings at Dalhousie University. The participants are from across Canada and several other countries, although we did manage to meet one or two lifetime Haligonians in the group. Throughout the month we got to know many members including; students, teachers, and business people. We participated in several roles during our weekly sessions and shared different ideas with the group.
Tuesday evenings found us swinging at Bell’s Kettlebell course. This unique workout to tone and strengthen your body lasts about an hour. This lively group of Haligonians makes it so much fun that before you know it, you’re done!
We also enjoyed meeting our neighbourhood firemen when we stopped into the hall for a cup of coffee and a chat…..until they got a call!
Our last day in the city found us on CBC Radio’s Information Morning show where we enjoy educating listeners on CHIP Charity and Project Zoom.
Mayor Kelly’s office called to invite us for lunch shortly after we left the station. This worked out very well as my fridge was looking quite empty by now. We zoomed over to City Hall to enjoy fish cakes and blueberry pie, cooked by our very own Mayor, and literally rolled out the door feeling very full. He’s definitely a terrific cook, and we enjoyed sharing stories of our time in Halifax, and what to expect in our next city.
We’ve now said ‘see you later’ to all of our new friends as we prepare to pack up and zoom on to Charlottetown, PEI, on July 1st. I’ve found it’s easier to say that, then to say ‘goodbye’.
There’s a lot more information to share about our stay in Halifax, but…… you’ll have to wait for the book Zooming Across Canada.
