We decide to visit the The Farmer’s Market today and on our way we discover some country in the city.
A fox stops on the path we are travelling (Confederation Trail) and watches me grab the camera out of my bag, take off the lenses cap, turn it on, and then he moves closer and poses for this picture. Well, at least that’s what it looked like! Apparently foxes are making this urban shift to avoid the coyotes in the country, and it’s as common to see one in Charlottetown as it is to see a cat or dog. This guy’s pretty ratty looking as its moulting season and he’s definitely not shy.
There used to be many fox farms on the island in the early 1900’s which could explain why there are so many of them living here today.
We finally arrive (after several photo stops) at a quaint green building that hosts this year-round market on Saturday’s from 9 am–2 pm, and during July and August they are also open on Wednesday’s. The products include items you would typically find at a Farmer’s Market; fruit, vegetables, seafood, fresh meats, sausages, baked goods, potted plants and flowers.
The one business that had me fascinated was Lady Bakers Tea Trolley.
Owner Katherine Burnett is a friendly local tea expert and uses an Affinitea machine (www.affinitea.com) that looks like an espresso machine to make each perfect cup. It takes 30-50 seconds, and the only other places you’ll find this type of brewing system in Canada, is at her second location in town at Founder’s Hall (opened May 2011), and at another tea business in Vancouver.
If you’d like to send a bit of the Island to friends or family, her Post-Teas are a great way to send a note and a treat at the same time. This postcard packed with tea won best new product on PEI at a recent show Katherine attended.
Stop by for a cup of ‘good ‘ol regular tea’ or one of her best sellers; Chai Latte or her Lady Slipper Blend. On my next visit I plan on trying the Chocolate Mint blend. Visit her website for more information: www.ladybakersteatrolley.com
