The ‘newly wed’ and ‘nearly dead’

live in this city, or so I’m told.  People of all ages really do live here; however, when you look at the statistics, Victoria’s residents include a high number of retirees.

Approximately 6.5% of this city’s population and its surrounding area are over the age of 80.  This is the highest share for any of our country’s metropolitan areas.

Why is this such a special place for retirees?  After living here for a short time, I believe the attractiveness of calling this city home consists of several factors including the mild climate, year-round golf and kayaking, amazing scenery, and a slower pace of life.

A furry new friend

Even the dogs have a marvelous quality of life here with an abundance of trails and beaches to explore.

Vancouver Island received its name from George Vancouver.  This officer in the British Royal Navy spent time exploring the area between 1791 and 1794.  This large island has approximately 740,000 residents and almost half of them live in the Greater Victoria area (340,000) made up of 15 municipalities.  They City of Victoria has approximately 80,000 residents.

The view out our condo window

It certainly did not take us long to become comfortable with being residents of this fair city.  The view of the Inner Harbour from our condo window is stunning and continually changes as the boats, ferries, and floatplanes come and go, and the sun rises and sets.
